Our Ludwig Breakbeats Accessories

In April 2020, we got a Questlove/Ludwig Breakbeats compact drum kit. We wanted to get a boom arm that would fit in the bass drum tom mount and a bass drum pedal/beater that would work with the bass drum riser. We had read several reviews online (e.g., http://compactdrums.com/ludwig-breakbeats-review/) that some pedals don't work well with the riser. Specifically, the chain/pedal collides with the drum rim or the beater gets over-extended.

Here are our solutions:
1) Bass drum pedal: DW2000
2) Bass drum beater: DW Black Sheep Beater (this is a wooden ball with a removable soft covering so you can quickly change from hard to cushioned attack sounds)

They work with minimal over-extension:

The mounting pole ("down tube") is 14 inches long, which is taller than we would have liked. We have it as far down in the mount as it will go and it works fine, but if we were shorter it might not work. It could also be nice to mount the ride at the level of the rack tom, but that's impossible unless we flip the boom arm upside down, which could get in the way of playing the bell.

The tall boom mount though does make it easy to add a cowbell wherever we want though via

Hope this helps anyone else out there getting a Breakbeats.

  1. A reader also recommends the Tama Speed Cobra 310 pedal for a Breakbeats kick drum

  2. I've sawn a few inches of the boom mounting pole to allow the ride to be closer to level with the tom, and still got just enough room to fit another clamp for a 10" splash cymbal. About pedals, has anyone tried an Iron Cobra 900 on Breakbeats or other 16" kick?
