We have never understood vinylphiles, yet we are the comics analog of vinylphiles; we prefer to read our comics in the original format they were designed for. Take the Sandman series for instance. It was written as single issues with a fixed page length and ads. When Gaiman wrote, he took ad placement into account to help sculpt the flow of the reading experience. Collected reprints of the Sandman lose that among other parts of the single-issue reading experience. Unfortunately, getting your hands on the earliest Sandman issues can be expensive. We had hoped that an affordable alternative would the reprinted single issues under the "Essential Vertigo" title. We did a quick comparison of Issue 5 and found the ads are not in the same place (and of course they ugly up Dave McKean's brilliant covers a bit). Another difference is that the Essential Vertigo paper is glossy as opposed to the matte original. *sigh*
